“While the purchase price of a battery-electric truck is higher than its diesel equivalent, the total cost of ownership can be better. With the right approach, there are ways of bringing the overall lifetime costs down to a competitive level.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Range depends on the model and battery configuration. Our heavy-duty electric trucks offer up 400 km per charge, while our medium duty trucks can reach up to 450 km. Actual range is influenced by factors such as load, terrain, weather and driving style. The range and the service life can be extended with smart truck driving modes, driver training, and our digital route planning services.

Using an AC charger with our medium-duty trucks, it takes around nine hours to fully charge the batteries. With a DC charger, having up to 350 kW of charging speed, you can charge batteries 20-80% of their capacity in 60 min.

Initially we believe that most trucks will be charged at the customer’s home base overnight. As electric vehicles become more common, there will also be the need to charge them in many different places, such as loading bays, service workshops, truck stops and other places where trucks are parked.

Electric trucks produce zero CO₂ emissions, lower noise and vibration levels, and deliver fast, responsive acceleration. This enables transport in zero-emission zones and during restricted hours, while improving driver comfort and reducing environmental impact. With no exhaust fumes, goods can even be delivered indoors. As more transport buyers set ambitious zero-emission targets, offering electric transport can also create new business opportunities.

In general, to make the comparison it is necessary to look at the total cost of ownership. The shift to electric trucks means a higher initial investment for the transport company, followed by considerably lower running costs. Electric trucks often also offer new business opportunities as they can transport goods to locations and at times that are not possible with fossil-fuel trucks. A growing number of cities are introducing zero emission zones where only electric vehicles are permitted. The suitability of the solution must be analyzed together with the local customers. Also, we believe the initial investment will be reduced as the volumes increase and the cost of batteries decreases over time.

Electric trucks in reality

Our electric trucks meet the needs of many industries, from urban distribution and waste management to regional haul and construction. By 2026, customers in over 50 countries are using Volvo’s electric trucks and more than 250 million km have been covered. In Australia, electric trucks have been in operation since 2021 with 145 currently on the road and 3 million kms driven and counting. Over the many years we’ve been working with electrification, we’ve built a strong expertise in optimising the use of installed energy, charging, and servicing of electric trucks across our dealer network. We also plan to trial local manufacture at our factory in Queensland.

For us, this truck signifies our commitment to leading from the front with sustainability and alternative fuels.”
